Tim Marshall OBE, Managing Director, Jiscom

Key Aims in Jiscom are:

  1. To develop new revenue streams to generate income so enabling Jisc to deliver its mission. This will be done by leveraging its assets in a measured and prudent manner.
  2. To establish a lean and sustainable high performing company to achieve this outcome.

Background

After holding senior management positions in the BBC, Tim became managing director at Buena Vista Productions International and senior vice-president at the Walt Disney Company. In 2000 he joined new start-up Wide Learning as chief operating officer. In 2005 he joined Janet, the UK’s national research and education network as CEO and in 2014 was appointed Chief Executive of Jiscom.

Tim’s specialist interest is developing best commercial and business practice in public enterprise, particularly delivering excellent customer service and responsive development processes which efficiently support new products and services.

Outside Jiscom Tim has been seconded to the Athens, Beijing and London Olympics broadcasting organisations to support international production quality control.

Tim’s charitable work has included producing the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall for the past 15 years and he now directs West End Heroes in the west end to raise funds for Help for Heroes. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Member of the British Computer Society and Royal Television Society. In 2015 he was awarded an OBE for services to service and ex-service personnel.

Fred Walker, Vice President, Sales and Business Development

Key aims within Jiscom are:

  1. To generate revenue by leveraging Jisc infrastructure and other assets, both directly through Jiscom and also other partnerships. This will enable new connectivity solutions so driving innovation and transformation across public enterprise.
  2. To establish a comprehensive private cloud platform, from which G-Cloud solutions can be effectively and securely procured.

Background

After a career in the Royal Corps of Signals in communications Fred joined Racal Telecoms where he became a Principal Technical Support Specialist.

In 2002 Fred joined Global Crossing in Network Operations and in 2006 he became Director EMEA Network Operations.

In 2011 with the acquisition by Level 3 Fred became Sales Director Professional Services & Consultancy EMEA. Here he was responsible for revenues of over $30m delivering an 80% increase in revenues year on year.

In 2015 Fred joined Jiscom as Vice President, Sales and Business Development.

Fred’s specialist interest is developing a trusted and informed relationship with customers. To underpin this he is keen to bring the best operational and commercial practice into Jisc and integrating it into the ethos of community shared development that has led to Jisc being a frontrunner in world leading digital technology.

Throughout his career in the armed forces Fred was a dedicated hockey player and a member of the Royal Signals Corps Hockey team and now when he’s not selling he enjoys spending quality time with his family and grand-children as well as making prize-winning jam!

Sophie Spedding, Business Operations and Sales Support Manager

Key aims within Jiscom are: 

  1. To establish and support high quality business operations systems and key strategic sales and marketing resourcing.
  2. To manage all company administration and ensure the business is well-organised with all the resources required to provide excellent stake-holder and customer service.

Background

Having indulged her passion for travelling and life as a Summer Camp Counsellor following graduation from the University of York in Social Science, Sophie joined Yummi Media Group (now Cinime Ltd) as their Office & HR Manager.

CIPD qualified, Sophie has a broad range of experience across HR operations and office management systems. She joined Jiscom in June 2015 following a sabbatical earlier this year to revisit some of her favourite places and a subsequent contract at The Jockey Club.

Sophie’s passion lies in working within teams to develop a positive and proactive support ethos in a commercial environment. This is achieved by creating a collegiate and enjoyable working environment that brings a smile to everyone every day.

Her voluntary work is driven by her love of working with and helping people of all ages. Some of the opportunities she has been involved in include volunteering with the Scout Association and Age Concern, taking part in an aid expedition to Kenya and currently as a a Patient Liaison Volunteer with St Christopher's Hospice.
