Covering the whole of the UK and connected across the globe, the Janet network has a dedicated optical fibre infrastructure, using over 6,800 km of optical fibre.

In 2013 Jisc launched the Janet6 state-of-the-art optical dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) based infrastructure, equipping the Janet network with increased resilience and massive scalability to address future needs.

With a network backbone thatruns at 100Gbit/s, the Janet network now has a total initial operating capacity of 2.1Tbit/s (over 5 million times as fast as the average UK broadband connection) and serves more than 18 million UK users.

Over time, the Janet network has broadened its geographic reach, working with regional and devolved-administration public-sector networks.
